45 North Winery – 2008 Northport

"Northport" Port

“Northport” Port

Cold Michigan nights require a fortified red wine that will rush through your veins like little torches! This sweet red port is from 45 North Winery up in the Leelanau Peninsula of Michigan and produced by those who know about long, cold nights. In our glass, deep garnet in color with ruby red edges. On the nose, aroma’s of dried black cherry, dark berry, tobacco, and cedar. The mouth feel is full bodied, lush, velvety, with smooth as silk tannins. Flavors of dried cherry fruit, sweet red berry, herb, and rich spices! Super long finish with a hint of white pepper, cedar, and smoke. Sweet, sexy, and seductive with whispers of “come hither” proposition my senses! The label on the bottle does not specify the variety of grape but we are guessing a possible blend of Cabernet Franc & maybe a splash of Pinot Noir. Full bodied but not overly complex. Very enjoyable and a port we would have no problem buying again. This type of sweet wine could only pair with something rich and sweet itself. Try a rich cheese, milk or dark chocolate, almonds, or a berry based dessert.

We really enjoyed the 45 North Winery 2008 “Northport” and give it a 90 point rating! Full bodied, lush, rich fruit, and hints of herbs and spice. We checked the website for 45 North Winery but could not find this port for sale. Hopefully it is in their cellar aging to perfection. The website for the winery is http://www.fortyfivenorth.com/. Check out their website for directions, wines, and upcoming events. The Leelanau Peninsula is a beautiful, scenic place that you should visit if you haven’t already. If you have a 2008 vintage of this port, we would drink it before 2015. WineSplashing!!
