Famiglia Castellani Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG
The Castellani Family has had their roots in grape growing and wine making for over 150 years and they are a familiar name in the Italian wine world. The family owns and works over 2400 acres of land dedicated to grape growing to produce some of the finest wines in Tuscany. This Famiglia Castellani Chianti Classico Riserva 2015 is 100% Sangiovese grapes and aged in oak for two years. I enjoy this style of wine in the summer because even though they show bold flavors, they are not overly lush and fruity to drink in hot weather.
In my glass, deep ruby red in color with a ruby rim. Aromas of dark cherry, stewed berries, anise, red licorice, and funky herbs on the nose. Full bodied, dry, with smooth but noticeable tannins. Intense flavors of ripe dark cherry, plum, dusty leather, tobacco, and cedar nuances. A plethora of flavors and layers that keep coming at you…..in a great way! The second sip brings out more tangy cherry flavors with hints of red licorice, funky forest floor berries, star anise, and smoke leading to a long, smooth oak finish. This Chianti Classico has that rustic, dusty, grippy dry style that is very typical in a good Chianti but finishing smooth. It is a style that tells of its terroir driven origin of Tuscany, Italy and I love that! A great food wine that would pair well with Ossobuco, game, lamb chops, meat lasagna, grilled vegetables, and medium to sharp cheeses. 92 Points! (Wine Splash).
