Tenute Rubino Punta Aquila Primitivo
Say “Ciao” to my delicious new friend from the Puglia region of Italy! This is Tenute Rubino Punta Aquila and she is a 2013 Primitivo born and bred in Salento. The Primitivo grape is the equivalent to what we call Zinfandel in the United States and other parts of the world. The grapes are the same but the wine flavors will be slightly different based on the terroir of the region the grape is grown in. This wine is 100% Primitivo and aged 4 months in French oak before spending about 5 months in bottle.
In my glass, dark ruby in color with ruby red highlights. A wonderful bouquet of sweet black cherry, currant, tobacco, and black pepper. Full bodied across the palate, velvety with soft tannins. Rich and robust with flavors of blackcurrant, kirsch, blueberry jam, tobacco, and black pepper stand out. Concentrated with many lavish, complex layers. The next sip showed more currant and cherry notes with tasty glimpses of ginger and herbs leading to a pleasant berry oak finish. Very approachable wine with nice ripe fruit and smooth style. Pair with grilled red meat, pepper flank steak, turkey rolls stuffed with sausage and cranberries, tomato sauce based pizza, and medium to strong cheeses. 90 Points! (Wine Splash).
