Materra | Cunat Family Vineyards – Napa California
On a recent trip to Napa Valley, California, rumors were swirling about the great wines at Materra | Cunat Family Vineyards and that it definitely deserved a visit. Well who are we to dispel a rumor? So we immediately made reservations to do a tasting and tour of the Materra | Cunat Family Vineyards to see if those rumors were justified. Curiosity may have killed the cat but we were hoping that curiosity would let us taste some of the best wines in California! We loved that the winery location was so close to the city of Napa where we were staying for the weekend. And also loved that the Cunat family were “transplanted” farmers from the Midwest who brought their passion for wine and farming to Napa to make their dreams come true.
When we arrived at the winery location, we were mesmerized by the beautiful, rolling hills which makes the perfect backdrop to pair with a great bottle of wine. We were greeted by one of the Materra wine professionals, Darren, who would take us on our “Tour and Tasting” that day. This was the perfect tour for us so we could tour this working winery and taste different wines along the way. As we toured each different part of the winery, we received a different wine to taste. You never realize the hard work that goes into each step of the wine making process until you speak with one of the tour guides. Everything has an influence on these wines from the soil, weather, the vineyard manager’s grape growing techniques, the winemaker and what barrel they will use, length of time in that barrel, and the influence from the Cunat family and what style they want to portray from each bottle. Darren was funny, informative, and was always prepared to pour our next sip of that Materra nectar. Are you sure we are not in Heaven?
Each wine we tasted was like a ballet….graceful and elegant. The red wines at Materra | Cunat Family Vineyards were Heavenly. Especially the 2012 Materra Cabernet Sauvignon Hidden Block with its intense flavors of blackberry pie, pepper, cocoa and a long, sensual finish. Both of the white wines we tried were the youngsters of the tasting. The 2015 Materra Chardonnay had wonderful tropical fruit notes with a hint of oak that lead to a smooth finish. And the 2015 Materra Sauvignon Blanc with flavors of stone fruits, pineapple, and a savory crisp finish! All of these wines could easily be 90 point wines or more.
Since we made such an intelligent decision by visiting Materra | Cunat Family Vineyards, we wondered if wine actually makes your smarter by drinking a glass or two. I may have to contact Dr Oz and see if this could possibly be true! But even if it is not, this was a wonderful stop on our Napa weekend and one that is worth a second visit next time. Great views, excellent wines, knowledgeable staff, and perfect customer service! Add Materra | Cunat Family Vineyards to your next Napa visit for a truly euphoric experience. WineSplashing!!
